Third-dredge-up Oxygen in Planetary Nebulae?
نویسنده
چکیده
The planetary nebulae He 2-436 and Wray 16-423 in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy appear to result from nearly twin stars, except that third-dredge-up carbon is more abundant in He 2-436. A thorough photoionization-model analysis implies that ratios Ne/O, S/O and Ar/O are significantly smaller in He 2436, indicative of third-dredge-up oxygen enrichment. The enrichment of oxygen with respect to carbon is (7±4)%. Excess nitrogen in Wray 16-423 suggests third dredge-up of late-CNcycle products even in these low-mass, intermediate-metallicity stars.

IC 10 : the history of the nearest starburst galaxy through its Planetary Nebula and H ii region populations ⋆
We report the results of spectroscopic observations, obtained with the Gemini North Multi-Object Spectrograph, of 9 planetary nebulae (PNe) and 15 H ii regions located in the 5.5×5.5 inner region of the nearby starburst galaxy IC10. Twelve new candidate PNe have been discovered during our pre-imaging phase. Nine of them have been spectroscopically confirmed. The direct availability of the elect...
متن کاملPlanetary Nebulae in the Magellanic Clouds
We present a large and homogeneous sample of optical and UV observations of PNe and derive their abundances and the implications for the Intermediate Mass Stars (IMS) and Galactic chemical evolution. We observe the “hot bottom burning” (HBB) reaction, oxygen depletion (ON cycle) and/or production (likewise carbon) during the third dredge-up. All these effects are more efficient at lower metalli...
متن کاملPlanetary nebulae as probes of the chemical impact of AGB stars
Planetary nebulae (PN) represent the evolutionary fate of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stellar envelopes, thus are ideally suited to study the chemical impact of AGB stars. Stellar evolution predict elemental enrichment through the AGB evolution, and convective dredge-up episodes allow the products of stellar evolution to reach the stellar outer layers. Planetary nebulae are probes of thes...
متن کاملAn Infrared Survey of Neutron-capture Elements in Planetary Nebulae
We present results from an ongoing survey of the infrared emission lines [Kr III] 2.199 and [Se IV] 2.287 μm in Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe). Krypton and selenium may be produced by slow neutron-capture nucleosynthesis (the “s-process”) during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase of PN progenitor stars, and brought to the surface by convective dredge-up before PN ejection. We detect emis...
